5 Expert Hacks For A Natural Makeup Look*

5 expert hacks for a natural makeup look
A natural makeup look is minimal so it should be easy, right? In reality, it can actually be more difficult to achieve the ‘I woke up like this’ look. Luckily, we’ve compiled some tips from expert makeup artists to help you craft the perfect natural face.

Customise your base
Mixing a small amount of moisturiser to your regular foundation will allow you to achieve a dewier finish to your skin. It will also allow you to even out your skin tone so that the rest of your makeup will look much better once applied. Any visible breakouts can be covered with a small amount of concealer, just make sure not to apply too much as this will do nothing but accentuate the problem areas. A concealer that’s pigment-rich tends to work best.

Define, don’t dramatise
Dramatic eye makeup can be great for nights out but for a daytime, natural makeup look you’ll want to avoid certain colours and techniques. Your eyes can be defined by applying a simple black or brown eyeliner to the top and bottom waterlines. This pushes the pigment into the roots of your lashes and highlights your natural lash line. At the same time, a soft brownish tint on your eyes can enhance their natural colour as long as you apply it to the centre of your lids, the brow bones and the corners of the eyes.

Choose a muted blush
Similarly, a harsh blush isn’t what you want to go for if you’re aiming for a natural look. When it comes to this product, the more subtle, the better so once you’ve applied your preferred shade, go over it once more with either a clean brush or the brush you used to apply your foundation. This will help to mute the colour and create a softer finish. Brands such as Tropic Skincare offer natural products in a range of colours to suit all skin tones.

Keep lip colour subtle
Like your blush, your lip colour should also remain subtle. While bold, matte lipstick is still a huge trend, it’s not always the most practical look for everyday wear and can be overwhelming compared to the rest of your natural makeup. This doesn’t mean that you can’t still use your favourite lipstick. Instead, once you’ve applied it as normal, dampen a small makeup brush with a drop of primer and buff the colour into your lips to achieve a more natural looking lip stain.

Labels aren’t always there to follow
Most good makeup is multi-purpose, so there’s not much need to read the labels to find out where on your face you can apply it. Some of the best natural looks can be achieved by using products in places that they weren’t necessarily designed for. For example, a light matte lipstick can work wonders as a blush or a soft natural eye can be achieved with a brush of bronzer. Instead of sticking to one product for one area, take a look at what you have in front of you and where else it can be used.

  1. This is such a handy post - I don’t wear an awful lot of makeup but that’s mostly because I am so rubbish at applying it! I already have to mix moisturiser with my foundation when I wear it because I have very dry skin and rosacea, so it’s good to know that other people recommend doing that too! x
