The warmer weather seems to have finally come along and we all know what that means... leg shaving season is upon us. Keeping on top of hair removal is such a chore at the best of times but when Summer comes around, it's even more annoying. Which is why laser hair removal might be something to consider. At Pulse Light Clinic based in London they offer laser hair removal to men and women (aged over 18) and also offer free consultations and patch tests.

What is Laser Hair Removal and how does it work?

Laser Hair Removal is the deliberate removal of unwanted body hair using a laser. Hair grows all over body - some areas being very fine and barely noticeable and other areas being more thick and noticeable hair. The thicker hair can sometimes be in unwanted places and laser hair removal is used to remove or reduce the hair.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle (not skin) with the laser light which damages and destroys the hair follicle which stops the follicle from producing any further hair.

The process is called selective photothermolysis as it selectively targets the hair and not the skin. Because laser hair removal is not electrolysis, it means it can target a large area of hairs in one go and is less painful. Following a treatment, the dead hair needs to come through the skin, when the hair does come through, it then sheds after one to three weeks.

During this time it will look like the hairs are growing but they are actually being pushed out by the new skin. After a second treatment, depending on your skin and hair type, the area where the removal has taken place may already begin to look patchy as certain hair follicles stop producing new hairs.

After the laser hair removal, the skin may look red and the hair follicles may be raised and bumpy but it usually calms down within a few hours but can take up to 48 hours for some clients. You may also experience itching a few days after treatment as the hair is pushed out. Multiple treatments are necessary to treat all of the hair as they are not all growing simultaneously as hair follicles grow in different hair growth stages.

What are the benefits?

- Reduction of ingrown hairs
- Not having to shave and wax
- Skin feels and looks smoother
- Permanent hair reduction
- Reduces excessive hair growth (PCOS)
- Smaller pores
