Trying Out Period Underwear... Does It Actually Work?

I've been debating on trying something different for my periods for a while and I was thinking about trying the Moon Cup but because of my chronic condition (chronic pelvic pain/suspected endometriosis) I was a little worried that I'd make matters even worse, which is obviously something I want to avoid doing. Which is why I decided to try out some period underwear instead. There's a few different brands on the market who sell period underwear but I got the opportunity to try out Modi Bodi Underwear which can be used for periods, perspiration, light incontinence and pregnancy.

I received the Light-Moderate "Classic Full Brief" RRP £19.50* in Black to try out. The Light-Moderate absorbency claims to hold 10ml which is equal to 1-1/2 tampons and is for light-medium period days, a back up for heavy period days or for sneaky leaks and heavy discharge.

I'm not going to lie, I was a little worried about leaking when I decided to give the pants a whirl for the first time. I do have naturally heavy, painful periods and they used to be that heavy that I'd have to always wear night time pads all throughout my period (yep, really) but since going on the combined pill my periods have become a lot lighter and also don't last as long either (3 days at the most). Now my first day is what I would call moderate and then it lightens as the days go on. You can read more about my experience with going on the combined pill in this post

I decided to size up to a 4XL just because I didn't want to mess around the PR company who sent them basically but the 4XL fit me well and I still have some extra space if I get any bloating during my period which let's be honest, that always happens unfortunately ugh. So I would say the sizing is pretty spot on and they are so comfortable! I thought I'd be able to feel the area which absorbs your period (or whatever you're using them for) but you really can't. They just feel like normal underwear. Also if black isn't your colour then they offer other colours too from Blue, Beige, Purple and Grey depending on which style you choose.

So how have I got on using them so far? I honestly love them and I'm a complete convert. They really are a game changer. I've not leaked once! They absorb everything like Modi Bodi claim they do, so you don't feel like you're sitting in blood like you do when you wear a pad. I know it sounds gross but let's be honest, that's exactly what it feels like when you're having a heavier flow. Since trying them for the first time back in February I've bought another two pairs exactly the same as the first pair. I might get a different style soon (I've been looking at the Seamfree Full Brief or the Sensual Hi Waist Bikini) for a Heavy-Overnight flow just because I've been switched to different pill which I'm starting soon (the mini pill) and I know that can cause irregular periods and you can have proper full blown periods on it which is really annoying but I know if that does happen then I'll be backed up by my Modi Bodi pants no matter what.

Overall I bloody love them (pun intended) and although I do still always have a pack of pads in just in case, I've definitely been opting for my period pants more and I just pop a pad in my bag like normal when I'm out and about just in case I do happen to have a mishap (which I highly doubt would happen). They also offer a 30 day risk-free trial so if they don't work for you then you can claim a refund.

Caring for them is really simple too! You just rinse them in cold water after use but don't soak them. Just rinse until the water runs clear and then pop them in a cold machine wash. Do NOT use any products to clean them with though i.e stain removers, fabric softeners and then just hang them out to dry. They are not only a great invention in general but also they are obviously great for the planet too because it's cutting back on your plastic use. I know it may sound a little pricey to spend £19.50+ on a pair of period pants but think about how much money a pack of pads or box of tampons costs each period? Especially if you suffer with heavier periods because I know I could get through a heck of a lot of pads per month if I was having my normal periods. Modi Bodi also say that their garments should last between 6 months to 2 years depending on the wash and care of the garments.

They don't just sell underwear either then also sell activewear, swimwear, accessories and bundles and you get £10 off if you use my referral link! If you are thinking about trying a different alternative way to deal with your period rather than a pads and/or tampons then I'd highly recommend trying out these because they really are fab and I can't recommend them enough.

  1. I've never heard of these but I suffer with heavy periods too so I'm always skeptical to trying new things! I may give these a go though! Great post.

    1. They are honestly so good! I've not used them for a heavy period (yet) but they seem to have great reviews all round for both light and heavier flows x
