What I've Been Watching Recently...

I'm back with another ‘What I’ve Been Watching Recently’ post this week! I checked when my last one of these posts was and it’s already been 3 months, it feels like it was only a month or so ago. This year is flying by! Anyway, here’s what I’ve been watching recently…

First up is Miriam Margolyes: Australia Unmasked which is still available on iPlayer. I love Miriam Margolyes, I know she’s not everyone’s cup of tea because she can be quite rude and she’s very opinionated but I think she’s so funny, she just takes no shit from anybody and the majority of the things she says make sense from the silliest of topics to the more important issues. Her latest series Australia Unmasked follows on from her previous series in Australia but this time she’s going around and asking people from all different backgrounds whether or not they’ve had a ‘fair go’ at life in Australia and what they think a ‘fair go’ really means. It’s a really interesting series, I will say that sometimes the stories of the people she meets can be quite sad but some of them are really heartwarming as well.

I’ve also got back into Call The Midwife, I dropped off from watching it a couple of years ago but I watched all of the most recent season (after watching the Christmas 2022 special) and I really enjoyed it. Some episodes made me laugh and some made me cry and I’m kind of sad that’s over for another year. I definitely feel like they could have more episodes per season because it just doesn’t seem quite enough.

As I’ve said before, I prefer watching TV shows over films so I’ve only watched one new (to me) film since my last What I’ve Been Watching Recently posts.  I finally got around to watching Jurassic World: Dominion and I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting it to be very good because I know when it came out, it didn’t have the best of reviews but I actually really enjoyed it. ~Incoming spoilers about previous films~ The plot follows on from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom with the dinosaurs now living among the humans, Biosyn are trying to track down Maisie Lockwood who has basically been adopted by Owen and Claire and they’ve kept her hidden away for her own safety. Dr Ellie Sattler from the original Jurassic Park films is also investigating some strange goings on involving swarms of genetically engineered giant insects which later involves more of the OG cast. It was nice to see the old cast again from the original Jurassic Park films and it wrapped up the Jurassic World film series nicely.

I talked about The Reluctant Traveller with Eugene Levy in my recent blog post about TV Shows Coming Out To Add To Your Watchlist. It follows Eugene as he travels to places such as Finland, Tokyo, Utah, The Maldives and more to look at some of the world’s most remarkable hotels as well as explore the local area and find out more about the people who live there. From the get-go he admits he prefers staying in or around a resort usually instead of exploring the area he’s in and meeting the locals and you can quite clearly see he’s pushing himself out of his comfort zone in each episode and feels awkward taking part in some of the local experiences. I really enjoyed this series, it was funny (as expected) but it was also really educational and interesting too. It kind of reminded me of An Idiot Abroad with Karl Pilkington in a way.

Lastly is You Season 4 which finds Joe in London with a new name, a new look and a new job after what took place in the previous season. With his new job as a university professor, Joe is now called Jonathan Moore. ‘Jonathan’ thinks he’s in the clear and cracking on with his new life, however, things soon turn upside down when someone starts killing his new posh ‘friends’ and then starts stalking him and blackmailing him. I’ll be honest, I found it hard to get into the new season, because of the whole new life set-up and the fact that the majority of the new characters are unlikable but Part 2 of Season 4 definitely made up for it as it has lots of twists and turns. I definitely preferred the previous seasons more though, I think if they do renew the show for another season that it's more like the previous seasons.
